Breastfed or formula- fed baby? There’s a major difference in the risk of constipation between breastfed babies and those on formula. ![]() ![]() If you are breastfeeding and if your baby has had normal breast milk poop earlier, chances are that he or she is only going through a growth period and therefore actually absorbs pretty much everything he eats. Also, at around 4 weeks of age, a baby’s digestive system begins to mature and the number of bowel movement usually decreases, especially if the baby is breastfed. Adding to early pregnancy fatigue comes sleeplessness in early pregnancy. Yes, the pregnancy gods don.If your baby seems completely happy and eats and urinates, just as usual, there is probably nothing you have to do. The poop will come. If your baby is formula- fed, the risk of constipation is higher. Formula- fed babies are more prone to become constipated because the formula is much harder to digest than breast milk. Also, the formula can’t be as fully digested as breastmilk, so formula fed babies, regarding of age, should have quite regular bowel movements. A formula fed babies should not go several days between pooping; for them, it can be a sign of constipation. It is also important to know when your baby started having constipation problems and if he or she passed meconium in the first 3. If the meconium passage was delayed and your baby has been having constipation since birth, one of the possible reasons for the constipation might be Hirschsprung’s disease. This is a condition caused by the absence of neural ganglia in the terminal bowel regions. The absence of the ganglia leads to decreased bowel movement and hence constipation. The condition is usually screened for by performing a rectal exam in a constipated child during a routine pediatric visit. Signs of constipation (and not)Here are some signs of constipation to look for: In a newborn, firm stools less than once a day with straining and difficulty passing them. In older babies, firm stools less often than 7 days for breast- fed babies and 4 days for bottle- fed babies. Dry, hard stools and pain on passing them. Hard, pebble- like stools passed by a baby who strains during a bowel movement. Signs of blood along the outside of the poop. Belly pain along with hard, infrequent stools. How to mitigate constipation. While it is normal for babies will strain from time to time to move the stool along through the intestines, crying hard is not. If you want to do something to help your baby while straining, try holding his or her knees against his or her chest to help your baby “squat”. This is also very effective for tummy pain to release gas. If your baby is bottle- fed you can experiment with different types of formula to find the one that has the least tendency to result in constipation. For some babies, soy- based formulas work better. For others, a hydrolysate formula, such as Nutramigen (link to Amazon) can make a real difference. You can also feed your baby smaller amounts of formula more frequently, to help the intestines cope with the formula. Twice as often is a rule of thumb. Make sure that you don’t add too much formula powder when preparing the formula. Take care not to overfill or tightly pack the scoop. You can also try offering your baby some extra water . Breast milk is a great laxative. There are also baby laxatives or glycerin suppositories available, but don’t use them more than as a last resort. It is much better to try to change what your baby eats than to use short- term solutions like these are. Another short- term option, that can be used once in a while, is to insert a q- tip very gently into your baby’s anus. Sometimes that is enough to trigger the bowel movement. Just don’t make it a habit; the baby needs to learn how to poop without your help. How often does a baby poop. How often the average baby will poop depends on his or her age as well as on if breastfed or formula fed: A newborn baby, from day 5 or 6 of living, may poop after every feeding. At 1- month- old, the average is still some 4 times per day. By the time your baby is 2 months old, the average has dropped to 1 time per day. At 3 months, a fully breastfed baby may go for up to 1. They grow rapidly and digest practically everything they consume. This can continue until the baby is introduced to solid baby food. This is not true for formula- fed babies, who really should continue pooping more or less every day. Remember that the variation can be quite large and your baby is not likely to be constipated unless you notice some of the symptoms described above. Two of my kids had periods at around 3 months old when they pooped every 1. This is to get advice on possible treatment for constipation and to make sure that your baby is completely healthy. For older babies, if they are in pain (regardless of it the poop is hard or not), a doctor should assess the situation. Blood in poop, beyond some streaks, should also be assessed. Does Meat Rot In Your Colon? Beans, Grains, and Vegetables! How many times have we all heard this bunk myth repeated?“Humans can’t actually digest meat: it rots in the colon.”And its variant: “Meat takes 4- 7 days to digest, because it has to rot in your stomach first.”(Some variations on this myth claim it takes up to two months!)Like most vegetarian propaganda, it’s not just false, it’s an inversion of truth. And the reason we have a bacterial colony in our colon is because our own enzymes can’t break down everything we eat. This fact alone proves that humans, while omnivores, are primarily carnivorous: we have a limited ability to digest some plant matter (starches and disaccharides) in order to get through bad times, but we cannot extract meaningful amounts of energy from the cellulose that forms the majority of edible plant matter, as true herbivores can. ![]() ![]() ![]() 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 1989 1990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995 1996 1997 1998 1999 1 I had the clamped version of the ETS in 2000. Vegetarian and vegan diets are low- calorie, high- fiber, and nutrient- dense. They are excellent for weight management, lowering LDL cholesterol, and lowering blood pressure. Without proper planning, the absence or limitations of animal sources may cause nutritional deficiencies in vitamin D, vitamin B1. Since vitamin B1. Protein Supplements Guide: Complete Guide To Protein! Welcome to Muscle and Strength’s complete guide to protein supplementation. This guide contains information on every aspect of protein supplementation, including a look at the benefits of using protein supplements, protein supplement timing, and a look at various forms of protein foods used in supplementation. If you still have questions after reading the information on protein supplements contained in this article, please ask one of the experienced members of the forum. Understanding Protein Basics. What is Protein and Why is it Important? Protein is one of three macronutrients used by the body for energy. These macronutrients include protein, carbs and fats. Scientifically, protein is a series of amino acids linked together like a chain. The links that hold these amino acids together are known as peptide links. Amino acids are the primary source for nitrogen in the body. Having a positive nitrogen balance is essential for proper muscle growth and repair. In addition to its muscle building properties, protein is needed. To keep a balanced PH level in the blood. The human body is in a constant state of “protein turnover.” Muscle tissue is continuously being repaired and replaced. To maximize this repair, you must maintain a protein positive nitrogen balance. When you undereat protein, you confuse your body. It only has so many raw materials to work with, and can’t repair everything it needs to repair. In this scenario, muscle can be lost. In addition, other vital bodily functions are compromised, such as hormone regulation and blood PH balance. When you are involved with an intense weight training regimen, more muscle tissue than normal is in need of repair. This is the reason why weightlifters and bodybuilders need more protein. Muscle growth is more taxing on the body’s nitrogen balance then muscle maintenance. Frequent protein feedings insure a steady stream of amino acids, and help maintain a proper nitrogen balance. Protein and Fat Loss. Protein foods are very thermogenic. Simply put, it requires more energy to digest protein. The human body has to work 3. For this reason, a high protein diet boosts your metabolism and aids in fat loss. Proper protein intake is also required for the body to properly mobilize stored fat for energy. If you undereat protein, your body will have a harder time drawing on fat stores, and may cannibalize muscle tissue for energy. This is one of the reasons why low protein diets can make you feel weak and tired. Protein and Recovery. Protein plays a vital role in muscle recovery and workout “rebound.” When you workout, two things happen. Your muscles are depleted of glycogen. And a positive nitrogen balance allows your body to be in “muscle repair mode”. The faster your muscles repair, the faster you recover. Conversely, undereating protein foods creates a negative nitrogen balance. In this state, it will take longer to recover. Extra protein is essential, especially for athletes who have frequent workouts, or for athletes who are cutting fat. Protein Food Sources. Typical protein food sources include: eggs, cheese, milk, chicken, seafood, fish, poultry, beef, pork, lamb, veal, soy, nuts and legumes. Small amounts of protein can also be found in fatty and starchy foods. Because protein levels in these foods are minimal, they are generally “ignored” by bodybuilders and athletes when a protein diet is structured. Protein food sources are divided into two categories: complete and incomplete protein foods. A complete protein food contains all essential amino acids. Animal proteins (meat) are complete protein sources. Incomplete protein foods, such as vegetables, lack several essential amino acids. These lacking amino acids vary from food source to food source. Protein supplement foods have grown in popularity over the last 3. They are convenient, and require no cooking time. Protein supplements are also cost effective, and can provide an average serving cost far below that of beef, seafood and even chicken. Benefits of Protein (Protein for Good Health)Proper protein intake has numerous benefits for good health. Eating protein keeps your body in an anabolic state. In terms of muscle building, “anabolism” refers to the construction, and not destruction of muscle tissue. The opposite of an anabolic state is a catabolic state. Not eating enough protein can cause muscle tissue to be catabolized. Growth Hormone Regulation. Proper growth hormones levels are essential for good health. Growth hormone contains 1. Eating enough protein insures that your body has the necessary building blocks to construct growth hormone. Growth hormone deficiency slows the metabolism, and can lead to lower bone density, muscle loss, and numerous other health problems including and number of psychological issues. IGF- 1. IGF- 1 allows muscle cells to properly respond to growth hormone. IGF- 1 contains over 7. Without proper protein intake, IGF- 1 levels can be lowered, making it harder for your body to utilize available growth hormone. Metabolism. As stated previously, protein requires more energy to process, so inherently it boosts your metabolism. Eating less then ideal amounts of protein also makes it difficult for the body to draw upon fat reserves. Insulin. Protein helps lower insulin levels in the blood, which is a factor in proper energy regulation. How Much Protein do I Need? The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for adults in the USA is 0. This translates to approximately 0. For a 2. 00 pound individual, the minimum RDA requirement is 7. For a 1. 50 pound individual, the minimum RDA requirement is 5. Those involved with intense exercise, or individuals looking to add muscle mass, should consume at least twice the RDA’s recommended minimums. It is generally advised that bodybuilders eat 1 to 1. Another good guideline is to make sure that 2. It has been established that athletes and bodybuilders need more protein to insure fast recovery and new muscle growth. With this information in hand, it’s time to take an in- depth look at protein supplements. What are Protein Supplements? Protein supplements are protein and nutrition sources, and food products, that are utilized to assist bodybuilders and athletes to achieve their desired daily protein intake requirements. Types of protein supplements include protein powders, protein bars, weight gainers and meal replacements. Protein supplements generally contain more then 2. Protein supplements also come in numerous flavors, from fruit flavored protein powders, to cookie and cream flavored weight gainers, to peanut butter flavored protein bars. Understanding Common Terminology (Isolate, Blends, Amino Acids, etc.)The following is a list of common terms associated with protein supplements: Isolate. An isolated protein source is one that has been chemically purified to remove most everything other then the actual protein source. Generally isolates are 9. Concentrate. A concentrated protein source is not as pure as an isolate, and generally contains 7. Concentrates contain more fats, carbohydrates, and in the case of whey protein, more lactose. Blends. A protein blend is a combination of various protein sources and purity levels. A blend can be more cost effective then a pure isolate, and can also offer the benefit of having both fast digesting and slow digesting protein sources. Amino Acids. Amino acids are the building blocks of protein. While there are over 1. These standard amino acids are separated into two categories: essential and non- essential amino acids. Essential amino acids cannot be created in the human body, and must be obtained from food. Non- essential amino acids can be synthesized, or created, in the human body. BCAA. Branched chain amino acids, also called BCAA, is a term that refers to a chain of the three essential amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine. The combination of these 3 essential amino acids make up over one- third the skeletal muscle in the body, and play a vital role in protein synthesis. Weight Gainer. Weight gainers are high calorie protein powders meant to assist bodybuilders and athletes who are in need of rapid weight gain. They can be used as meals on the go, or in between meals as a means of adding extra daily calories. Meal Replacements. Meal replacement protein products are considered to be entire meals in and of themselves. They contain a formulated nutritional and macronutrient blend that provides not only enough protein, but also an appropriate amount of carbs, healthy fats and vitamins and minerals. Recovery. A recovery blend is a protein supplement that contains any number of additional, non- protein supplement products meant to aid in post- workout recovery. These supplements range from creatine to multivitamin and minerals, and larger doses of glutamine and taurine. Slow Digesting. A slow digesting protein source provides a long term stream of protein and amino acids, meant to assist in keeping a positive nitrogen balance for longer periods of times. A slow digesting protein is a great choice for in between meals. Fast Digesting. A fast digesting protein source, such as whey protein, acts quickly to help regulate bodily nitrogen levels, especially after periods of fasting. A fast digesting protein is also beneficial as a post- workout protein source. Energy Bar. Energy bars provide a quick, healthy and sustained source of energy when you need a pick- me- up in between meals. While an energy bar does contain some protein, in general, it does not contain as much protein as a protein bar. Benefits of Using Protein Supplements. Most hardcore athletes make sure to eat anywhere between 5 to 8 small protein meals each day. Preparing the necessary food for these meals can be extremely time consuming. The primary benefit of using protein supplements is that they require very little “prep” time. Protein supplements are generally “grab and go.” How many times has life intervened, and changed your plans for the day? For most of us, quite often. Weight Loss on a Paleo Diet: 1. Expert Tips. The reasons for going Paleo are multitudinous, running the gamut from disease elimination to exercise optimization and everything in between. With its inflammation crushing power, Paleo is able to handle these tasks with ease, which is why it can be easy to forget that Paleo is the perfect solution to the everyday problem of weight loss. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() The sad fact is that two out of three adults in the U. S. We live in a world where pizza is classified as a vegetable, canola oil is considered “heart healthy” and everything is washed down with soda, so simply going Paleo and ditching all that junk can often be enough to get to a healthy weight. Sometimes you need a little more help, however, and that’s where we come in. By joining forces with top Paleo experts like Mark Sisson, Loren Cordain, Robb Wolf and Jason Seib, Paleo Magazine is providing you with the ultimate guide to losing weight with Paleo. You might not need every tip presented here to supercharge your personal results. Chances are, you probably only need one good one, the one that connects with you and speaks to your soul. Change is tough, and if you’re struggling with your weight, it’s a struggle that the whole world can see. ![]() ![]() ![]() In the recent May 2012 publication of Obesity Reviews, a team of researchers performed a detailed systematic review of clinical studies looking at acupuncture and.![]() Don’t be afraid to give yourself a pep talk right now, because you can achieve your goals. By combining your personal power with Paleo, anything is possible. Calories Count (But You Don’t Have to Count Calories)Sorry, but somebody had to say it. Even when following the Paleo diet, calories still count. The caveat, however, is that Paleo calories generally count less because they primarily come from whole, unprocessed foods. The reason for this is that whole foods require more energy to digest than their processed counterparts. Take, for example, a stalk of celery. By the time you chew, swallow, digest and absorb it, you’ve actually expended more calories than the celery contains, meaning that it’s actually providing negative calories! By comparison, a Twinkie requires almost no energy to chew, digest or absorb, but if you were going strictly by the listed caloric content, you would think that a calorie from a Twinkie is the same as a calorie from celery. In other words, a calorie is not a calorie. What Paleo folks have to keep an eye out for are the Paleo “loopholes,” Paleo foods that are technically allowed, but are still calorie dense and easy to eat. To be sure, Paleo treat foods made with sugar from dates, honey and maple syrup, and fat from coconut oil or other nuts are certainly better options than Twinkies and Ding Dongs, but they are still treats. Save them for special occasions to avoid overloading on healthy but excessive calories. Paleo Weight Loss Takeaway: Make a point to eat mostly whole foods while avoiding processed foods — even the Paleo ones. Focus on What You Can Eat Rather Than What You Can’t. Weight gain doesn’t happen overnight, and neither does weight loss. In order to see Paleo weight loss results, you have to be in it for the long haul; it has be a lifestyle rather than a diet. Unfortunately, diets generally put the focus on forbidden foods, rather than permitted ones. In the Paleo world, most of us can recite the mantra, “No grains, beans, dairy, sugar or industrial seed oils” with our eyes closed, but the thing that makes Paleo a true lifestyle is the plethora of produce, the multitude of meats and the vast cornucopia of spices, herbs and other flavors that are 1. Paleo approved. By looking at your plate of Paleo food options as “half full” rather than “half empty,” you’re much more likely to feel enthusiastic, optimistic and excited about sticking with the Paleo approach, and with this consistency will come results. On the contrary, if you’re always thinking about all the things that are excluded in Paleo, chances are you’re going to feel pretty miserable. You might think that you can no longer go out to dinner with friends, enjoy family meals or celebrate the holidays. The truth, however, is that your Paleo weight loss plan can actually open up an entirely new world of eating experiences if you simply focus your attention on what you can eat rather than what you cannot. Paleo Weight Loss Takeaway: Discover a new Paleo- friendly food every day. Eliminate the Need for Willpower. As a rule, we give way too much credit to willpower. If someone is successful, we say that they have a lot of it, and if they fail, we say that they were lacking in it. The truth, however, is that willpower is a pretty shabby pillar to lean on, for anyone. When it comes to the relationship between willpower and food, the work of Stanford food behaviorist Brian Wansink demonstrates that simple things like overly large plates, bowls and even utensils encourage overeating, as does serving food “family style” or watching TV. Oftentimes, we make these “mindless eating” mistakes without even thinking about it, and blame our lack of “willpower” when we find ourselves staring at the bottom of a bag of potato (or plantain) chips. A better strategy is to use this information to our advantage, and eliminate the need for willpower in the first place. By taking willpower out of the weight- loss equation, you also eliminate much of the shame and judgment that goes along with being overweight or obese. When you “fail,” take it as an opportunity to review the situation from an objective perspective—in other words, become your very own behavioral scientist. Investigate and implement new systems, test the results and repeat until the desired outcome is achieved. Paleo Weight Loss Takeaway: Stock your pantry and refrigerator with whole- food Paleo ingredients that require thoughtfulness to prepare. When serving food, use smaller plates and bowls, and eat with a minimal number of distractions. For more tips, visit Mindlesseating. Thank you for stopping by my blog. My story is a lot like yours. Move a Lot, Exercise a Little. If we look through the artifacts left behind by our hunter- gatherer ancestors, we won’t find a stair climber, spin bike or barbell amongst the bone fragments and stone tools. For most of human history, exercise was the natural byproduct of living in a world that required movement. Building shelters, hunting and gathering food, dancing and playing games gave our bodies all the stimulation they needed in order to be healthy. Today however, we have the luxury of sedentarism, and we can quite literally move through life without ever moving. At some point along the way, enterprising individuals created gyms as exceptions to the rule, and an entire industry was borne out of our desire for entirely voluntary exercise opportunities. For those of us who are trying to lose weight, we probably think that since being sedentary is bad, exercise is good, and more exercise is even better. Unfortunately, however, the benefits of exercise follow a dose response curve, meaning that there is a point when more isn’t better—it’s actually worse. Unless you are a professional athlete, achieving high levels of movement—and not intense exercise—should be the goal. Instead of sitting at work, implement a standing or treadmill workstation. Instead of driving your car to the store, ride your bike, and if you have to drive, park farther out in the parking lot. If you have the chance to take the stairs, do it. When you go to the playground with your kids, play. The bottom line is that there are ample opportunities to move every day, but we just need to give ourselves permission to take them. Intense exercise, then, is only a supplement to the daily diet of movement that emulates the lifestyle of our ancient ancestors. Paleo Weight Loss Takeaway: Shoot for 1. Sleep It Off We’ve seen it hundreds of times. Someone starts a weight loss regimen and immediately gets results. Healthy Nigerian Eating Diet is all the rave this year and since we published this post on weight loss, there have been several questions on Healthy Eating. They lose 1. 0, 1. The weight loss plateaus even though they are doing exactly what got them results in the first place, and as the results stall, frustration grows. At this point, most people either give up completely or double down on their diet and exercise regimens. We, on the other hand, propose a third solution: sleep. With the widespread use of smart phones, bedroom TV sets and harsh indoor lighting, disrupted circadian rhythms and shoddy sleep are just as common as SAD diets, but somehow the message of getting more (and better) sleep just hasn’t sunk in yet. Nevertheless, eight hours of solid, restful sleep should be priority number one for everyone, and priorities number one, two and three for those who are trying to lose weight. A good starting point for sleep rehab is to turn off the TV at night and instead read or listen to a book. Orange lights that are low in circadian rhythm- disrupting blue light, or blue light- blocking glasses, can also help improve sleep quality. Make sure your room is completely dark at night and at a nice, cool temperature. A solid sleep routine, one that you repeat every night, can also help condition your body and mind so that sleep comes more easily. Like anything, results come from repeated practice, so don’t give up if you aren’t sleeping like a baby right away. Paleo Weight Loss Takeaway: When your weight loss success is stalling, spend more time sleeping. Measure Success in Multifaceted Ways. If you ask yourself, “Why do I want to lose weight” three times, what answer do you get back? Do you want to be healthier? Do you want to be happier? Maybe you just want to be able to walk up a flight of stairs without getting winded. When you keep asking the question “Why?” you eventually peel back the hidden layers behind your desire to lose weight. Although we mistake it for the ultimate goal, weight loss is only a proxy for deeper and more complex desires. If you understand that your true goal goes beyond a number on the scale, then it becomes clear that you need other metrics to gauge your success. You may want to consider performance measurements like how fast you can walk, jog or run a mile, or enlist a personal trainer to help you do body composition testing that takes into account levels of muscle mass in addition to body fat. Q: I have been going through some rough flares recently and am so tired all the time. I used to go to work with initiative to accomplish goals and be successful in what I do. I know that I am blessed to have a job, but struggling with this disease has taken away my drive for work, exercising, and even spending time with my family. Do you have any advice on how to get the drive back? A: Fatigue is a very common problem in patients with IBD, both during disease flares but also during times of remission. This fatigue can come with poor sleep, low energy, and depression, if symptoms become severe enough. Sleep disturbance is common in patients with IBD, and there are several potential reasons for this, one of which is that the inflammatory substances in the gut may also have an impact on the brain. Medications used to treat IBD affect sleep, especially steroids. If poor sleep is contributing to the symptoms you describe, there are things you can try to get better sleep. ![]() These techniques, sometimes called . People who sleep the best often engage in relaxing activities before bedtime, rather than watching violent TV or movies that can arouse people. It is important to get all of your sleep at one time, and you should avoid napping during the day, especially if you find yourself tossing and turning at night. People are encouraged to avoid alcohol, as this can worsen the quality of sleep and make it less refreshing. However, just like bad habits can breed more bad habits, good habits can lead to more good habits and help you to break out of your low motivated . Scheduling your day (and sticking to it!) can be very useful with this, and I would encourage you to detail your activities for the week. Be very specific and build enjoyable things into your schedule (exercise, time with family), as well as things that you have to do (work). The longer you can stick to this routine, the easier things become. Sometimes, low motivation and poor sleep may be signs of depression or other mental illness, so if your symptoms are going on for more than two weeks, it is worth discussing with your physician as you may require more help. Free fatty acids (meaning fat circulating in the bloodstream not packaged into triglycerides) result in inflammation, toxic fat breakdown products, and oxidative stress, which can gum up the insulin receptor pathway and lead to insulin resistance in our muscles. Insulin resistance is what causes prediabetes and type 2 diabetes. I explain the process in my video What Causes Insulin Resistance? As the level of fat in the blood rises, the body? It comes from the fat that we eat and from the fat that we wear. Hi Lucaso, I found a study that shows an inverse relationship between fatty acid intake and metabolic syndrome. I think you are right. This whole thing is a little. The number of fat cells we have stays constant in adulthood. The way researchers figured that out is by measuring the amount of radioactive carbon still trapped in our DNA from all the nuclear bomb tests. After massive weight loss, our fat cells shrink as they offload fat, but the number stays the same. Conversely, when we gain weight, our fat cells stretch as we pack more and more into each individual fat cell. So, when our belly, butt, or thighs get big, we. At a certain point, our cells become so bloated that they spill fat back into the bloodstream. This is called the spillover effect. Not only does an obese person have more fat, but they. I show this in my video The Spillover Effect Links Obesity to Diabetes. The fat can also enter our bloodstream through our mouths. If you put people on a low- carb diet, fat builds up in their muscles within two hours and insulin sensitivity drops. And the more fat found in the muscles, the lower the ability to clear sugar from the blood. Nearly 30 million battle diabetes and every 23 seconds someone new is diagnosed. Diabetes causes more deaths a year than breast cancer and AIDS combined. A fat- rich diet can increase fat in the blood, and this increase is accompanied by a decrease in insulin sensitivity.
